NYC Drenched: Flash Floods Submerge Brooklyn Streets

On Monday, residents of Brooklyn found themselves wading through ankle-deep floodwaters as severe flash flooding and high winds struck the borough. In Coney Island, near Neptune Avenue and 33rd Street, water levels reportedly reached two feet, prompting some to carry children on their backs to navigate the submerged streets.

Businesses along Neptune Avenue also suffered, with sandbags proving ineffective against the rising water. Market owners noted that recurring drain clogs exacerbate the flooding problem. Similar conditions affected the Belt Parkway in Queens, where relentless rain led to its complete closure in the westbound direction.

Beyond flooding, the storm caused other disruptions. In Crown Heights, approximately 4,660 customers were without power as of Monday afternoon. East Flatbush saw a large tree topple onto a house and car due to the inclement weather, causing significant property damage to at least one residence.

City officials, including Mayor Zohran Mamdani, had urged residents to prepare for potential flooding. Efforts by city workers to clear catch basins and inspect flood-prone areas were underway prior to the storm's peak impact.
