Four Shark Attacks Trigger NSW Beach Closures
20 Jan
Summary
- Dozens of NSW beaches closed due to four shark attacks.
- A surfer was attacked near Port Macquarie on Tuesday.
- Heavy rains created ideal conditions for shark activity.

Authorities have closed numerous beaches along New South Wales' eastern coastline due to a series of four shark attacks occurring since the weekend.
The most recent attack happened Tuesday near Port Macquarie when a 39-year-old surfer was bitten. While he sustained no serious injuries, beaches in the area were subsequently closed.
Earlier on Monday, a 27-year-old man was critically injured in a shark attack at Manly, leading to the closure of Sydney's Northern Beaches for at least 48 hours. Additionally, a young surfer's board was bitten at Dee Why beach.
On Sunday, a 12-year-old swimming in eastern Sydney was seriously injured. Officials are advising the public to avoid ocean beaches due to safety concerns.
Experts suggest that recent heavy rains have created ideal conditions for sharks, with brackish water and increased baitfish drawing them closer to shore. They recommend staying out of Sydney Harbour for 72 hours and ocean beaches for 24 hours after major downpours.
