A North Carolina mother is advocating for increased driver awareness following the tragic death of her 9-year-old son, Keegan. On Sunday, September 13, Keegan was fatally struck by a vehicle while riding his bike near his Durham home. His mother, Courtney Brooks, was preparing to take him to baseball practice just moments before the incident occurred near Knightwood Drive and Bengel Drive.
The driver of the vehicle, a woman in a 2020 Hyundai Palisade, was investigated by the Durham Police Department. As of the report, no charges have been filed, and the investigation remains ongoing. Brooks is urging communities to remember her son's loss as a call to action for drivers to slow down in residential areas and be more cautious of children playing.
Keegan was a student at Oak Grove Elementary School. In response to the tragedy, the school principal informed parents and staff, assuring that counseling services would be provided to students to help them process their grief and cope with the death of their classmate. Brooks remembers her son as a loving child who enjoyed snuggling with her.
