A devastating accident occurred late on Monday night in Noida's Nithari village, where a 49-year-old cyclist, Ashok Sharma, was fatally struck by a speeding BMW. The collision happened near Saraswati School as Sharma was cycling home after work, with visibility severely compromised by dense fog. The force of the impact was so severe that it threw Sharma several meters, splitting his bicycle in two and causing critical head and bodily injuries.
Following the collision, the driver of the BMW, identified as 39-year-old property dealer Mankul Mahajan, lost control of the vehicle. The car veered off course, striking a nearby electricity pole before mounting the road divider. Alerted by witnesses, police arrived at the scene and subsequently arrested Mahajan, who reportedly attempted to flee but was apprehended by locals. An FIR has been filed against him for causing death by negligence and rash driving.
Sharma, the sole breadwinner for his family, was employed as a supervisor. While the driver underwent medical examination, reports remained inconclusive regarding potential alcohol consumption. Social media witnessed the circulation of a video purportedly showing cigarette packets, a lighter, and empty liquor bottles inside the vehicle, intensifying public outcry and demands for stringent action. Authorities are investigating Mahajan's background for any prior offenses.
