29 May
Summary
- A fire near a Hudson River tunnel stopped train service between Newark and NYC.
- Service delays are expected until this afternoon due to the contractor vehicle fire.
- NJ Transit tickets are valid on buses and PATH trains during the disruption.

Train service between Newark Penn Station and New York City has been suspended due to a fire that erupted early this morning. The incident occurred at 1:25 a.m. when an Amtrak contractor maintenance vehicle caught fire outside a Hudson River tunnel, impacting both NJ Transit and Amtrak operations.
Amtrak officials stated that service is not expected to resume until this afternoon. As a result, NJ Transit's Midtown Direct Service is being diverted to Hoboken. Other affected lines include Main, Bergen County, Port Jervis, and Pascack Valley Line service, which will bypass Secaucus. Additionally, North Jersey Coast Line service to and from South Amboy will not operate today due to equipment shortages.
NJ Transit is accommodating affected passengers by allowing their rail tickets to be used on NJ Transit and private carrier buses, as well as on PATH trains at Newark Penn Station, Hoboken, and 33rd Street in New York. Amtrak has apologized for the inconvenience and is offering rebooking options and refunds while working to restore full service.
