Hero Cop Plunges into Icy Lake to Save Dog

An officer in Sparta, New Jersey, has been lauded as a hero for his quick actions in rescuing a dog from a frozen lake. The dramatic rescue occurred on Wednesday afternoon at Lake Mohawk after a neighbor reported seeing dogs on the ice, with one falling into the freezing water.

Patrolman Michael Poon arrived on the scene and immediately utilized ice rescue equipment. Demonstrating remarkable bravery, he entered the icy water without hesitation, successfully pushing the distressed Labrador, Sunkiss, back onto the ice and escorting her to safety. Both Sunkiss and her companion, Bruno, were reunited with their grateful owner.

The owner revealed that the dogs had escaped their yard through a weak point in the electric fence, noting Sunkiss's penchant for adventure. He expressed profound thanks for the police department's training and dedication. Authorities are now emphasizing the importance of increased caution near frozen bodies of water to protect both people and pets.
