A fire broke out Wednesday afternoon at the One Step Closer Animal Rescue (OSCAR) facility in Andover, New Jersey. The blaze, which reportedly started in the kennel area, put the approximately 40 dogs housed at the shelter at risk.
In response to the unfolding emergency, officials stated that the dogs were released from their kennels to prevent further harm as the fire spread. While no fatalities have been reported, one dog required veterinary treatment for burn injuries. Several other dogs may have escaped and are currently unaccounted for in the surrounding area.
In a collaborative effort, other animal rescue organizations, including Hudson Farm and Happy Tails Rescue, assisted in relocating the dogs. A GoFundMe page has since been established to support the shelter in its recovery from the incident.
