The mountaineering world mourns the loss of Nirmal "Nimsdai" Purja, who died at 43 following a devastating avalanche on Pakistan's Broad Peak in late July 2026. This Nepal-born climber, celebrated for his mantra of "impossible is not in my dictionary," was an inspiration to countless adventurers.
Purja rose to global fame in 2019 by completing "Project Possible," summiting all 14 mountains over 8,000 meters in just 189 days. He further cemented his legacy with the first-ever winter ascent of K2 in January 2021, a feat celebrated by the global climbing community.
Beyond his record-breaking achievements, Purja was known for risking his life to rescue fellow climbers in the "death zone." His success also significantly boosted tourism and interest in Nepal's trekking routes and Himalayan culture.
His final journey took place in Pakistan's Karakoram range, where he was attempting to climb all 14 of the world's 8,000-meter peaks for a second time. The avalanche swept through the route between Camps 2 and 3 on July 30, 2026, tragically claiming the lives of Purja and his 10-member international team.
