Sunken Manhole Traps Newry Drivers
18 Dec
Summary
- A 4ft-deep hole on Bridge Street damaged multiple vehicles.
- Councillor reported the hazard two days before it collapsed.
- One driver faces £200 repair bill just before Christmas.

Vehicles have sustained damage after driving over a sunken manhole on Bridge Street in Newry, which had created an unmarked 4ft-deep hole. The hazardous manhole was reported to the Department of Infrastructure (DFI) on Monday, two days before it collapsed. Pádraig Fitzpatrick experienced a "bang" when his car drove over the hole on Wednesday night, resulting in two blown tyres and requiring a tow, leaving him with an approximate £200 bill.
This temporary repair was completed on Thursday evening, but came too late for those affected. Mr. Fitzpatrick, whose partner is eight months pregnant, was relieved that his family was unharmed despite the incident. He observed a shopping trolley had been placed in the gap to warn other motorists before traffic cones and tape were installed later that evening.
Councillor Doire Finn had initially reported the sinking manhole on Monday and warned the public, while councillor Declan McAteer noted another driver, a nurse, had also hit the hazard. Motorists can claim for damages from road defects, but reimbursement can be a lengthy process.
