Orlando Animal Shelter Rises From Ashes
6 Feb
Summary
- New 25,000-square-foot animal shelter to open in March.
- Facility replaces shelter destroyed by a 2021 fire.
- Upgrades include expanded medical facilities and kennels.

A new 25,000-square-foot animal shelter, located on South John Young Parkway, is scheduled to open in March. This opening marks a significant milestone for the Pet Alliance of Greater Orlando, as it replaces their previous Conroy Road facility that was destroyed by an accidental fire in 2021.
The new construction, currently about 90% complete, boasts expanded intake areas, isolation spaces, and upgraded kennels. A key focus of the redesign is enhanced medical facilities, featuring a full dental suite, surgery spaces, and a digital x-ray room, allowing for on-site treatment of animals with complex needs.
Beyond improved medical capabilities, the organization anticipates a substantial increase in adoptions. Having previously facilitated over 7,000 adoptions annually, the number decreased to approximately 3,500 post-fire due to space limitations. The new shelter aims to facilitate around 6,000 adoptions per year.
The transition to the new site carries emotional significance for the staff, reflecting a tragic past event but symbolizing a vital step forward. To support the organization's ongoing efforts, the Paws in the Park event will be hosted this Saturday by Chief Meteorologist Tom Terry.
