The newly inaugurated six-lane Porvorim elevated flyover has become the site of a fatal accident, with two people losing their lives within 48 hours of its opening. The incident occurred on the evening of September 14, 2026, when a car, allegedly driven in a rash and negligent manner, collided with a scooter. The impact pushed the scooter into a truck that was entering the national highway. The deceased have been identified as Sarvesh Vengurlekar, a 41-year-old native of Maharashtra who was riding the scooter, and Amita Salgaonkar, a 22-year-old resident of Siolim who was an occupant in the car. Their families were anticipating their arrival for Ganesh Chaturthi celebrations. Raunak Chari, the 22-year-old driver of the car and a resident of Moira, sustained injuries and was transported to GMC hospital. A 9-year-old passenger in the car, Sangita, also suffered injuries and is receiving medical attention at GMC. This accident highlights concerns raised in July, when police had requested the installation of traffic signals and other safety measures before the flyover's public opening.
