Two hydropower workers were miraculously rescued alive on Friday from a tunnel buried by debris in Nepal, ten days after catastrophic Himalayan flooding. Rescuers cheered as the men were brought through a muddy opening, offering a rare ray of hope.
The disaster, caused by a glacial and mountain collapse on the China-Nepal border on August 26, has resulted in at least 1,308 confirmed deaths and left over 5,600 people missing. Both rescued workers were reported to be in stable condition at a Kathmandu hospital, with one suffering from an injured leg.
Rescue operations are continuing at multiple sites, including the Trishuli 3A tunnel where the two men were found. Despite immense challenges, including walls of hard-packed debris, rescue teams, aided by international experts, have persisted in their search. The government had initially hoped more workers might be alive inside various tunnels.
The United Nations has launched a $50 million appeal to assist those affected, with aid delivery being a significant challenge due to the widespread destruction. The event has been described as a "Himalayan tsunami" by the Foreign Minister.
