Hundreds of hydropower workers narrowly escaped a devastating flood that swept through Nepal, trapping many in dark, debris-filled tunnels. Ram Chandra described clinging to tunnel rungs for six hours, inching forward with colleagues using a tin sheet for support as water surged around them.
Survivors, many from the Jumla region, were found by villagers after losing their clothes to the torrent. One survivor estimated only 100 out of 1000 workers at nearby projects made it out.
Rescue efforts are ongoing, with teams attempting to establish contact with those still missing. The disaster, described as the worst to hit Nepal in years, has resulted in hundreds of deaths and widespread destruction.
