Nepal Flood Devastates Border Town, Tibet Origin Suspected

A sudden and massive flood surged down the Bhote Koshi River on Wednesday morning, originating from the direction of Tibet and causing extensive damage to northern Nepal's border settlements. The settlements of Timure and nearby Syafrubesi in Rasuwa district bore the brunt of the destruction, with vehicles, goods, and other property being swept away. A recently constructed bridge was also destroyed in the deluge.

Officials have issued high alerts for several downstream districts, including Nuwakot, Dhading, Chitawan, and Gorkha, urging residents near river banks to take safety measures. The Nepal Army, Armed Police Force, and Nepal Police have been mobilized for rescue and relief efforts. Two Nepal Army helicopters have been dispatched to the Trishuli River area to aid in search and rescue operations, with one equipped with an Emergency Medical Rescue Team heading to the district hospital.

This devastating flood was reportedly caused by the sudden draining of a previously unnoticed 'supraglacial' lake, and not by rainfall in the region. The scale of the damage is still being assessed, with data collection underway. This incident echoes a similar catastrophic flood in the Bhotekoshi river area just a year prior, which resulted in at least ten fatalities.
