Nepal-China Border Floods Kill 97, Leave Hundreds Missing

A catastrophic flash flood and mudslide event along the Nepal-China border has resulted in a confirmed death toll of 97, with officials reporting the recovery of 97 bodies. The disaster has left an additional 384 individuals, including tourists, travelers, soldiers, and police, unaccounted for. The floods, which occurred recently relative to August 26, 2026, caused widespread destruction, sweeping away 19 bridges, damaging 40 kilometers of road, and impacting 13 hydropower projects. Two hundred trucks were also lost in the floods. The event was reportedly triggered by an earthquake on Wednesday, which caused an avalanche that led to the collapse of glacial lakes in Tibet, China. This surge created debris-laden floods in rivers along the border. Rescue efforts are actively ongoing on both sides, with personnel from Nepal Police, Armed Police, and the Nepal Army deployed. China's President Xi Jinping has ordered all-out efforts for search and rescue, as well as the evacuation of at-risk residents. The disaster has significantly impacted areas such as Rasuwa, Dhading, and Chitwan districts in Nepal, cutting off roads, power, and communications near the Gyirong Port. Affected individuals include nationals from Nepal, India, the UK, South Africa, Australia, and the Netherlands, with efforts to confirm the nationalities of others ongoing. India has pledged humanitarian assistance and is coordinating rescue and relief efforts with Nepal. Local authorities in India's Bihar state are monitoring embankments and preparing for potential impacts.
