Nashik Shaken: 4.3 Quake Rattles Homes, Temple
10 Aug
Summary
- A 4.3-magnitude earthquake struck Nashik late Saturday, causing damage.
- No casualties were reported despite tremors felt across seven rural areas.
- New seismographs installed to provide early earthquake warnings.

Nashik district was shaken by seismic activity late Saturday night, with a 4.3-magnitude earthquake causing minor damage and panic. Tremors were felt across the city and in seven rural talukas, lasting for approximately five seconds.
The earthquake, the strongest recorded in Nashik in 40 years, led to minor cracks in five houses across Kalwan, Surgana, and Dindori tehsils. Additionally, a temple wall in Junothi village, Peth taluka, partially collapsed. Fortunately, district officials confirmed that no lives were lost or injuries sustained.
This event follows a recent visit by a Ministry of Earth Sciences team who installed six seismographs along the Peth-Kalwan border. These instruments are designed to detect seismic waves and issue early warnings, bolstering the region's preparedness.
Nashik, situated in Seismic Zone III, has a history of mild earthquakes. The district administration noted that tremors are believed to be linked to small faults in the Western Ghats. Awareness drives and mock drills are being conducted, with particular caution advised for residents of 'kutcha' homes.
