Nagpur's Dark Road: A Deadly Commuter Trap
13 Feb
Summary
- A 500-meter stretch of road is a dangerous accident hotspot.
- Defunct streetlights plunge the road into near darkness at night.
- A misplaced road divider exacerbates traffic chaos and confusion.

A critical 500-meter section of Nagpur's road, leading from Gittikhadan Square to Gorewada Chowk, has emerged as a severe accident hotspot. This area is plagued by near-total darkness after sunset due to non-functional streetlights. The lack of illumination drastically reduces visibility, making it difficult for drivers to detect pedestrians, animals, or stalled vehicles. Adding to the peril, a recently installed road divider begins several meters into the lane, rather than at the square, causing significant confusion and abrupt lane changes for motorists.
The situation is further aggravated by a narrow culvert at the Gittikhadan T-point, which struggles to manage the heavy flow of school buses, city buses, and private vehicles. Traffic discipline is minimal, with many motorists disregarding signals. Encroachments by vendors also narrow the usable road space, making overtaking hazardous and forcing slower vehicles to impede traffic. Residents and commuters describe the stretch as a "virtual deathtrap," urgently calling for functional streetlights, proper divider placement, and strict traffic enforcement to prevent further accidents.
