Engineers Seek Bail in Fatal Mumbra Train Crash

Two Central Railway engineers have approached the Bombay High Court for protection after being booked in connection with a deadly local train accident near Mumbra. The incident on June 9 killed five commuters and injured nine when coaches of two passing trains scraped against each other, causing passengers to fall. The engineers, Senior Section Engineer Samar Yadav and Assistant Divisional Engineer Vishal Dolas, were booked based on a technical assessment report from VJTI.
The VJTI report suggested that the engineers and other senior officials were aware of unrepaired track conditions posing a fatality risk and held them responsible for failing to act. The engineers, however, contend that they were merely performing routine duties and that the charges overstate their individual roles within the complex railway system. They have argued that the case hinges on technical data they cannot influence.
The FIRs against the engineers had previously triggered a brief strike by railway staff, disrupting services and leading to further injuries and fatalities among stranded passengers. The High Court has ordered no coercive action against the engineers pending its next hearing on December 9.
