Tragedy struck Mumbai's Lalbaug area early Sunday as an electrocution incident near a Ganesh pandal claimed the lives of two individuals, including an eight-year-old girl. The incident, which occurred at 2:20 AM, also left four others injured. Officials reported that the electric current was detected at a temporary drinking water and cold drink stall erected near the pandal's entrance.
Following the immediate power cutoff by fire brigade personnel, six individuals who suffered electric shocks were transported to nearby hospitals. Tragically, Raghini Ghanshyam Yadav (8) was declared brought dead at Masina Hospital. Sujata (33) was also declared dead upon arrival at Global Hospital, where a 12-year-old girl, Ruhi Singh, remains in critical condition in the ICU.
Officials from the Brihanmumbai Electric Supply and Transport (BEST) undertaking are investigating the incident, which appears to have stemmed from a short circuit. A temporary electric meter installed for the Ganesh festival celebrations and the cold drink stall is under scrutiny. The Kalachowki police have initiated a detailed inquiry to determine the exact cause of the short circuit.
