Emergency services responded to a suspected carbon monoxide leak this morning at an M&S store located on Gallions Road in Charlton, south east London. The incident led to a major incident declaration, with over 30 individuals reportedly treated for symptoms, and 11 requiring hospitalization. Firefighters equipped with breathing apparatus conducted sweeps and ventilation of the building after detecting elevated carbon monoxide readings.
The London Ambulance Service dispatched significant resources, including their Hazardous Area Response Team, to manage the situation. Approximately 35 people had already evacuated the premises before emergency crews arrived. They assisted in treating affected individuals at the scene.
Local councillor David Gardner alerted residents via Facebook, advising them to avoid the area due to the ongoing response involving all three emergency services.
