Torrential rains have submerged vast areas of Mozambique's Gaza province, displacing over 327,000 people. Governor Margarida Mapandzene Chongo reported that many are housed in temporary shelters like schools and churches as floodwaters rise.
President Daniel Chapo has canceled his participation in the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland, highlighting the severity of the flooding impacting central and southern Mozambique. Nearby towns like Chokwe are almost entirely underwater, with streets in the provincial capital, Xai-Xai, resembling rivers.
The disaster has also ravaged infrastructure, with 152 kilometers of roads destroyed and over 3,000 kilometers damaged. Authorities warn that rains in southern Zimbabwe will further exacerbate the situation in Gaza province, with a countrywide red alert warning in effect.
