Sole Survivor Recalls Heartbreaking Pier Tragedy
20 Mar
Summary
- A mother honors her lost family on the 10th anniversary of a tragic pier accident.
- Only the infant daughter was saved from the car that slid into Lough Swilly.
- The mother seeks to celebrate lives lived rather than dwell on the devastating loss.

Ten years ago, Louise James returned from a hen weekend to devastating news: her partner, Sean McGrotty, their sons Mark and Evan, her mother Ruth, and sister Jodie had drowned. Their car had slid off a pier into Lough Swilly in County Donegal after a day at Buncrana.
Four-month-old Rioghnach was the sole survivor, miraculously rescued by former footballer Davitt Walsh. Louise James now strives to celebrate the lives of her lost family, cherishing daily memories and focusing on raising Rioghnach.
An inquest in late 2017 attributed the deaths to misadventure, noting the slipway was covered in algae. Sean McGrotty's blood alcohol level was found to be above the legal limit. Recommendations were made for improved safety at piers and slipways.
A 5K memorial walk is scheduled in Buncrana to honor the lives lost. Louise James wishes for attendees to wear red and white, celebrating the love and joy her family embodied.
