Mom Delivers Twins Unexpectedly on Highway
30 May
Summary
- Twins were born nearly two months before their due date.
- One twin was born in his amniotic sac, a rare event.
- The mother and grandmother navigated the emergency delivery themselves.

A Memorial Day weekend road trip took an unexpected turn for a Texas mother when she delivered twin boys prematurely on the side of Highway 377 near Lake Texoma, Oklahoma. The expectant mother, Shelbee Dugger-Kemp, who was 31 weeks pregnant, initially mistook her intense labor pains for cramps.
As the family rushed towards a hospital, the situation quickly escalated, leading to an emergency roadside birth. Dugger-Kemp delivered the first twin, Kane, inside the vehicle, wrapping him in a hoodie to keep him warm. Just five minutes later, his twin brother, Kallen, was born still encased in his amniotic sac.
The babies were then transported to Mercy Hospital in Ardmore, Oklahoma, and later transferred to Oklahoma Children's Hospital for specialized neonatal care. Both boys are reportedly stable, with Kane breathing independently and Kallen receiving oxygen support. The family faces challenges finding temporary housing near the hospital due to local events.
Doctors had previously warned of significant risks for the second twin, 'baby b,' due to an umbilical cord issue, adding to the mother's anxiety throughout the pregnancy. The family is awaiting the opportunity to transfer the twins back to Texas.
