Fast-Growing Modrite Fire Spreads, Prompts 'Go Now' Orders

The Modrite fire, located on the Colville Reservation, saw an alarming increase in size, expanding by over 8,000 acres between Wednesday and Thursday morning. This surge brought the total acreage to nearly 19,500 acres, with containment holding at 63%.
Due to the fire's rapid spread, officials issued Level 3 "go now" evacuation orders for areas south of Hall Creek and along specific roads leading to Inchelium. The evacuation shelter was moved to Kettle Falls Middle School to better serve those displaced.
Fire operations chief Jeremiah Miller described Wednesday as a "big day" for the Modrite fire, with its eastern edge making a significant run near Lake Roosevelt. The fire's growth, attributed to extremely dry fuels, low humidity, and winds, far outpaced predictions.
Meanwhile, the Bradeen Hill fire near Gifford grew by about 75 acres, reaching 4,170 acres with no containment. The Kaiser Canyon fire near Nespelem also saw an increase, now at 129,000 acres and 27% contained.
Additionally, Avista Corp. warned of potential public safety power shutoffs on Saturday due to high fire risk and strong winds forecast for the Inland Northwest.
