9 Oct
Summary
- A magnitude 6.4 earthquake occurred on Thursday afternoon in Mindanao.
- The quake's epicenter was southwest of Balut Island, Davao Occidental.
- PHIVOLCS reported no expected damage but warned of possible aftershocks.

On Thursday afternoon, a magnitude 6.4 earthquake shook parts of Mindanao. The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS) reported the tectonic quake occurred at 4:07 p.m.
The epicenter was located 42 kilometers southwest of Balut Island in Sarangani, Davao Occidental, with a shallow depth of 10 kilometers. This event was identified as an aftershock from the magnitude 7.8 and 6.5 earthquakes that occurred offshore Sarangani and Davao Occidental in June 2026.
PHIVOLCS recorded various instrumental intensities across several areas, including Sarangani, South Cotabato, Sultan Kudarat, and General Santos City. Despite the significant magnitude, no damage is expected from this particular tremor.
However, the agency cautioned that aftershocks might still occur in the region. Residents are advised to remain vigilant and aware of potential ongoing seismic activity following the event.
