One man has died and another is in a critical condition following a disturbing incident outside the Supanova Comic Con and Gaming event at the Melbourne Showgrounds on Saturday. The alleged attack occurred around 5pm when a grey Toyota reportedly mounted a kerb.
The vehicle then travelled approximately 120 metres along the footpath, striking three men in their 20s who were heading home from the convention. One victim succumbed to his injuries at the scene, while the second was transported to a hospital with life-threatening injuries.
A 33-year-old man from Werribee was arrested at the scene by an off-duty police officer. Investigators are examining the circumstances, including the potential involvement of speed, alcohol, or drugs. The driver, who is believed to be known to police, remains under guard in hospital.
Witnesses described hearing screeching tires before the car veered onto the footpath at an erratic speed. The driver reportedly attempted a U-turn before his vehicle stalled. A witness, a paramedic, provided assistance to one of the victims before emergency services arrived. Supanova has expressed its deep sadness and will hold a minute's silence.
