Manitoba has experienced a significant increase in road fatalities during 2026. As of November 1st, 73 lives have been lost in 65 fatal collisions, marking a concerning 28% rise from the same period in 2025. This figure also exceeds the five-year average by 28 percent.
October proved particularly grim, with the Manitoba RCMP responding to eight separate collisions that resulted in eight fatalities. A significant portion of the tragic toll involves young drivers, with 25 of the 73 deaths occurring among individuals under the age of 30.
Intersections and off-road vehicles were also factors in fatal incidents. Eighteen people died in 14 collisions at intersections, while 10 fatal crashes involved off-road vehicles. Staff Sgt. John Greer of Manitoba RCMP called the situation a tragedy affecting families and first responders.
While the exact causes are under investigation, potential contributing factors include impaired driving, excessive speed, and lack of seatbelt use. The RCMP is reminding motorists to slow down, drive according to worsening winter conditions, and avoid distractions to enhance road safety.
