A shocking incident at a Brazilian zoo resulted in the death of a 19-year-old man, Gerson Machado, who was mauled by a lioness after entering her enclosure. The victim had a documented obsession with big cats, previously attempting to travel to Africa to pursue his dream of becoming a trainer.
Machado, who had a history of mental health issues and spent time in care, had made prior attempts to breach security at the zoo and even tried to stow away on a plane to Africa. This repeated fixation led to the fatal encounter.
The zoo in João Pessoa has been closed following the tragedy, with officials launching an investigation. Zoo veterinarians reported the lioness was left stressed and in shock by the intrusion. Authorities are reinforcing the need to respect wildlife boundaries.
