A 33-year-old man lost his life on February 26 after venturing into a hazardous, off-limits zone within Hawaii Volcanoes National Park, near the Kīlauea caldera. Park officials confirmed that search and rescue operations were conducted overnight to locate the individual. The Kīlauea caldera is characterized by unstable terrain and dangerous volcanic features, with visitors urged to stay within designated open areas.
He was discovered on February 27 amidst steep terrain and subsequently airlifted to Hilo Benioff Medical Center. Tragically, he was pronounced dead at the medical facility. The United States Geological Survey (USGS) currently maintains an 'orange' alert for the Kīlauea Crater, advising caution and adherence to closure signs.
The Kīlauea volcano was last observed erupting on February 15, 2026, with intermittent activity since December 23, 2024. Forecasters from the USGS predict further eruptions are expected between March 10 and March 15.
