Gonzaga, who did not typically work in the refrigerated section, was reportedly covering for a colleague at the time of the accident. Emergency services, including firefighters and SAMU, responded promptly and worked to free him from the machinery using hydraulic equipment.
Despite their efforts, Gonzaga suffered cardiac arrest while still trapped. Rescuers were able to free him, but attempts to resuscitate him were unsuccessful. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
