Man Dies After Being Bitten By Beloved Family Dogs
11 Mar
Summary
- A 68-year-old man with Down's syndrome died from dog bites.
- The fatal incident occurred in January 2022 at his home.
- An inquest ruled the death an accident, with no explanation for the dogs' behavior.

A man identified as William John Jones, aged 68, died in January 2022 after sustaining severe injuries from dog bites at his residence in Lampeter. Mr. Jones, who had Down's syndrome, was pronounced dead at the home he shared with his niece and carer, Gwenfair Benjamin. The inquest heard that Mr. Jones had been living in Pleasant Hill for two years with Ms. Benjamin and her three British Bulldogs.
The court in Aberystwyth was informed that on January 10, 2022, Ms. Benjamin had left the property, locking two of the dogs outside. She returned four hours later to find Mr. Jones on the living room floor, having suffered 38 injuries.
A pathologist's report stated the cause of death was hemorrhage associated with leg injuries inflicted by the dogs, in conjunction with Mr. Jones's existing coronary artery atherosclerosis. The coroner, Peter Brunton, recorded the death as an accident, emphasizing that while Mr. Jones knew not to let the dogs in when unsupervised, there was no explanation for the dogs' unexpected behavior, as they had never misbehaved before.
