Monsoon Fury: Roads Crumble, Homes Collapse in Maharashtra

Monsoon fury continued across Maharashtra's Sahyadri region, with numerous locations receiving over 100mm of rainfall within a 24-hour period. This intense precipitation led to significant infrastructure damage, including road cave-ins in Pune's Rajgad (Velha) taluka, prompting authorities to close two district roads for public safety. The popular Madheghat route and another stretch near Balvad were shut down, with traffic being diverted.

Several stations across the Sahyadris registered triple-digit rainfall, with Tamhini recording the highest at 280mm. While the IMD did not forecast a new low-pressure system, independent analysis suggested one over Madhya Pradesh, which primarily enhanced rainfall in north Maharashtra. Rainfall activity was expected to weaken from Friday.

State disaster management data revealed a grim toll from rain-related accidents between June 1 and July 23, with 74 lives lost and 104 people injured statewide. Structure collapses accounted for the most casualties, followed by lightning strikes, landslides, and floods, underscoring the perilous conditions during the monsoon season.
