27 Aug
Summary
- A magnitude 5.0 earthquake occurred in Tibet on Thursday.
- The tremor's epicenter was 10 km deep in northern Tibet.
- China is responding to flood risks and barrier lake breaches in Tibet.

A magnitude 5.0 earthquake jolted China's Tibet region late on Thursday, according to the German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ). The seismic event had a depth of 10 kilometers and its epicenter was located in northern Tibet.
This earthquake occurred hundreds of miles north of areas in Nepal and China recently impacted by a severe flash flood. That disaster resulted in hundreds of fatalities and left over a thousand individuals unaccounted for.
In response to the flood situation, China activated a Level-IV flood response in Tibet, citing concerns about potential barrier lake breaches. The Ministry of Water Resources has directed local authorities to monitor lake conditions and rainfall, and dispatched an expert team to Gyirong county.
