Coroner Warns of Deadly M6 Junction Design
24 Feb
Summary
- Two women died in a crash involving a bus and car.
- Coroner cited 'high harm' concerns over M6 Junction 37.
- Junction design and speed limit may impede driver reaction.

A coroner has voiced significant concerns regarding the safety of M6 Junction 37, a site described as a 'high harm spot,' following the fatal crash of two women. Assistant Coroner Robert Cohen has formally reported to National Highways about the junction's design after Rita Thomas and Christine Dale died on October 1, 2024, when their car collided with a bus on the A684 exit ramp.
Cohen's report highlights that despite previous efforts, including new signage, 'several very serious collisions' have occurred. He is particularly worried that the national speed limit on the A684 may be too high, exacerbating the risks posed by the junction's layout. Evidence suggested the bus driver had insufficient time to react upon seeing the car.
