Deer Rescued from M&S Escalator After Upside-Down Ordeal
16 May
Summary
- A muntjac deer was found trapped upside down in a department store escalator.
- The deer was rescued by a sanctuary worker and nicknamed 'lucky' Lucy.
- Lucy sustained only a superficial cut on her foot during the ordeal.

A surprising rescue operation unfolded last Tuesday when a female muntjac deer was discovered trapped upside down in a department store escalator in Norwich. Staff at Hillside Animal Sanctuary received an unusual call reporting the animal wedged between glass panels with its foot caught. Sanctuary worker Ian Haywood successfully freed the deer, which was then nicknamed 'lucky' Lucy due to only sustaining a superficial cut on its foot. The deer is now resting and recovering at the sanctuary, reportedly enjoying a diet of branches, hogweed, and dandelions.
Wendy Valentine, founder of Hillside Animal Sanctuary, noted that while deer often get trapped in various places in Norfolk, this was a first. She suspected the muntjac had panicked and run into the escalator after entering the store. M&S staff were praised for their swift response in calming the animal before its rescue. The sanctuary, which cares for many rescued deer, confirmed Lucy is stable and settling in well.
