Dog Guards Trekkers' Bodies for 4 Days in Snow
27 Jan
Summary
- A loyal pit bull guarded its owners' bodies for four days.
- Two young trekkers died in extreme snowstorm conditions.
- Rescue teams airlifted the dog and the bodies after recovery.

In a tragic incident near the Bharmani Devi shrine in Chamba's Bharmour area, two young trekkers, Viksit Rana (19) and his cousin Piyush (14), lost their lives during a snowstorm. The duo had ventured into the high-altitude region on January 22 to record videos for Viksit's social media, a passion they pursued despite Viksit being a school dropout and recently having lost his father.
Rescue operations, initiated after a friend reported Viksit's distress calls on January 22, located the bodies on January 26. Tragically, they were found buried in snow. Their one-and-a-half-year-old pit bull, Sherru, remained steadfastly by Piyush's body for four days, refusing to abandon them even in sub-zero temperatures dropping to minus nine and minus 10 degrees Celsius.
Both bodies and the devoted dog were airlifted to a helipad and subsequently underwent post-mortem examinations. The Chamba administration, alerted on the night of January 24, mobilized an SDRF team which braved harsh conditions, including avalanche-prone terrain, to reach the suspected location. The pit bull has since been safely returned to Viksit's family.
