Boaters Escape as Canal Collapses Near Christmas

A section of the Llangollen Canal dramatically collapsed six months ago, three days before Christmas, narrowly avoiding serious injury. The breach sent a massive volume of water into a nearby field, leaving a trench where the canal bed once lay. Two boats were caught in the event, one left precariously on the edge of the chasm.

Boaters present described waking to creaking sounds and the realization of a crisis. One individual narrowly escaped disaster, later realizing his boat had been moored in the exact spot that gave way. He attributed his safety to a securing chain.

The incident left three vessels stranded and their occupants needing accommodation for the holidays. These boaters have since formed a close-knit support group, "Whitchurch Survivors," maintaining contact and checking on each other's well-being.

Businesses connected to the canal have faced significant economic impact due to the ongoing repairs. The Lockside Cafe, for example, has lost vital tourism trade as the towpath remains closed and fewer customers can access the area.

Work by the Canal and River Trust is actively progressing. The collapsed embankment has been rebuilt and reinforced, with plans to reconstruct the canal channel using concrete. Temporary dams and a pumping system ensure water flow to downstream areas.

More than 1,000 fish were recovered and relocated. The trust aims to reopen the Llangollen Canal by the end of the year, with a focus on rebuilding for future resilience.
