Lingering Storms Raise Mudslide Risks in Fire-Ravaged LA

As of November 17th, 2025, a powerful atmospheric river weather system has mostly moved through California, but not before causing at least six deaths and dousing much of the state. The lingering effects of this system are now posing a risk of mudslides in areas of Los Angeles County that were recently ravaged by wildfires.
Flood advisories remained in place through the past weekend for LA, Ventura, and Santa Barbara counties, where localized showers were still possible after heavy downpours on Friday and Saturday. Authorities warned that due to the abundant rainfall, it would not take much additional rain to cause further flooding and rockslide conditions in these fire-damaged regions.
Tragically, the storm system has also claimed several lives. In Monterey County, a 5-year-old girl was swept into the ocean by 15-foot waves at a state beach on Friday. The girl's 39-year-old father, Yuji Hu, from Calgary, Alberta, was killed while attempting to save his daughter. Additionally, a 71-year-old man in Sutter County, north of Sacramento, died on Friday after his vehicle was swept off a flooded bridge.
