Leopard Attacks Spark Fear in Karnataka Sanctuaries

Fresh tension has erupted in Karnataka's Cauvery and MM Hills wildlife sanctuaries following the death of a 10-year-old boy in a leopard attack on Sunday. This tragic event has heightened anxieties among residents and pilgrims, with many fearing it could be the same leopard responsible for a farmer's demise in January. Forest officials, however, have publicly refuted this possibility, stating that the leopard captured after the farmer's death was relocated. They argue the significant distance between the attack sites makes it unlikely the same animal is involved.

Despite official assurances, some experts suggest the link cannot be entirely dismissed without scientific confirmation. The recent attack occurred in the Cauvery Wildlife Sanctuary, separate from the MM Hills sanctuary where the January incident took place. Following Sunday's fatality, forest departments have halted all trekking activities to hill shrines within both sanctuaries. Drone teams are actively surveying forest areas along trekking routes, and efforts are underway to locate the elusive big cat.

Local communities and farmer associations have voiced their concerns, protesting alleged negligence by the forest department. They highlighted the increasing risks posed by wild animals in the region, endangering both devotees and villagers. Wildlife experts acknowledge that leopards can cover extensive distances, but confirming the identity of the predator in both incidents would necessitate scientific evidence like camera traps or DNA analysis.
