A British holidaymaker has secured a significant financial settlement after contracting Legionnaires' disease while on vacation in Cuba. Gary Cushnie, from East Yorkshire, fell ill six days into his June 2022 trip and required hospitalization upon his return to the UK.
His solicitors, Hudgell Solicitors, stated that Cushnie likely contracted Legionnaires' at the Iberostar Grand Packard hotel in Havana, the first of two hotels he and his partner visited. They alleged Tui failed to maintain adequate hygiene standards, putting customers at risk.
Tui confirmed an out-of-court settlement was reached, emphasizing it was without any admission of liability. A spokesperson for Tui expressed regret over Cushnie's illness and noted that as the company no longer operates in Cuba, the matter was resolved amicably.
Cushnie himself shared his shocking experience, noting the lasting impact the illness has had on his energy levels and breathing. He expressed that the settlement was not primarily about the money but about Tui acknowledging a failure in customer care.
