A woman suffered life-changing injuries, necessitating the amputation of her leg above the knee, after being hit by a car and pinned between two vehicles. The incident occurred outside the Co-op convenience store in Coldstream. The driver, identified as 89-year-old Christine Thomson, admitted to causing serious injury by careless driving on November 23 last year.
Thomson's vehicle collided with a parked car as she attempted to park, trapping the victim between the two cars. Her defense stated her foot slipped from the brake to the accelerator on a wet day. Despite a 69-year driving history without incident, Thomson was disqualified from driving for 40 months and fined £750 plus a £40 victim surcharge.
The victim sustained an open fracture to her right fibula and tibia, requiring surgery at Edinburgh Royal Infirmary. The other woman present suffered only soft tissue damage and was released from care. Thomson, who voluntarily surrendered her driving licence, expressed devastation over the accident.
