Laos Cave Rescue Ends: Two Missing Men Unaccounted For
6 Jun
Summary
- Search for two missing men in Laos cave has been called off.
- Five others were rescued after being trapped while hunting.
- Unstable cave entrance and rising water halt rescue efforts.

Rescue operations in Laos have ceased for two men who remained missing in a semi-submerged cave. The search, involving international teams, was officially called off on Saturday, one week after five other men were successfully extracted. These five individuals had been trapped since May 20 while hunting for bats and searching for gold.
Initial rescues saw one man brought out on May 29, with four others guided to safety the following day after water was pumped from a flooded cavern. However, despite intensive efforts from multiple countries, the two remaining men could not be found. Lee Kian Lie, a Malaysian cave diver involved, stated that the operation became too high-risk due to an unstable cave entrance and water management challenges.
Thai lead rescuer Kengkad Bongkawong confirmed on Facebook that no one would enter the cave due to the extreme risk. Water pumping will continue externally, and food has been strategically placed in case the missing individuals find a way out. Rising rainwater had significantly reduced space within the cave, and heavier rainfall was anticipated.
