Lake County 911 Faces Scrutiny Over Unanswered Calls
10 Sep
Summary
- System maintenance and AI outage coincided with a surge in emergency calls.
- Callers disconnected and redialed, losing their place in the queue.
- Commissioner demands better communication and scheduled software upgrades.
A "perfect storm" of complications on August 27th led to unanswered 911 calls in Lake County, prompting calls for improved communication and oversight. Commissioner Mike Repay stated that multiple issues occurring simultaneously caused the delays.
During a 15-minute period on August 27th, the Lake County 911 center received 80 incoming calls, averaging one every 11 seconds. This surge occurred while the computer-aided dispatch system underwent scheduled maintenance, requiring the automated non-emergency AI system to be taken offline.
Repay emphasized that software upgrades should not happen during peak hours and require better communication and sign-offs. He also suggested staffing shortages played a role in the incident. The 911 commission, the county dispatch oversight body, has not yet met to discuss the situation.
