Air Canada Jet Hits Fire Truck at LaGuardia
24 Mar
Summary
- LaGuardia tower was staffed by more than one controller.
- An Air Canada jet collided with a fire truck on the runway.
- Two pilots and two fire truck personnel were among those injured or killed.

A fatal collision occurred at LaGuardia Airport on Sunday night when an Air Canada jet struck a fire truck crossing the runway. The crash tragically claimed the lives of the aircraft's pilot and copilot, while several others sustained injuries. Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy addressed the incident on Monday, confirming that more than one air traffic controller was on duty in the LaGuardia tower at the time, dispelling earlier rumors. The National Transportation and Safety Board (NTSB) and a Canadian investigative team are now leading the inquiry into the exact cause of the accident.
Information released indicates the fire truck had been cleared to cross the runway for an unrelated emergency response when controllers issued urgent warnings to stop moments before impact. The flight attendant, Solange Tremblay, survived after being ejected from the aircraft but sustained a broken leg. The two individuals in the fire truck, Sgt. Michael Orsillo and Officer Adrian Baez, suffered injuries not believed to be life-threatening. This event marks the first fatal crash at LaGuardia in 34 years.
