A fatal collision occurred late Sunday night at New York's LaGuardia Airport when an Air Canada Express CRJ-900 aircraft struck a Port Authority fire-rescue truck. The incident, which happened shortly after 11:45 p.m. local time, claimed the lives of the flight's pilot and co-pilot.
The aircraft, operating on a flight from Montreal, carried 76 individuals. In addition to the fatalities, 41 passengers and crew members sustained injuries and were transported to local hospitals. The Federal Aviation Administration and the National Transportation Safety Board have launched investigations into the cause of the crash.
Weather conditions at the time included light rain and mist, with visibility reduced to 4 miles by midnight. AccuWeather reported that visibility had decreased from 7 miles at 11 p.m. Eastern time. Airport operations were also managing a separate emergency response earlier in the night.
