LA Shelters Stress: 300+ Animals Seized in Raid
23 Mar
Summary
- Over 300 dogs and cats were seized from a Lake Hughes home.
- Los Angeles County animal shelters opened Sunday to make space.
- Residents reported foul odors and lack of waste disposal for years.

Los Angeles County animal shelters are facing significant strain following the seizure of over 300 dogs and cats from a single property in Lake Hughes. The massive rescue operation on Friday prompted all seven county shelters to open their doors on Sunday, a day they are typically closed, in an effort to encourage adoptions and make space for the newly arrived animals.
The seizure involved 316 animals, including 250 dogs and 66 cats, from a residence on 266th Street West. This operation, reportedly the largest of its kind for the County of Los Angeles Department of Animal Care and Control (DACC), followed years of complaints from local residents who cited foul odors and inadequate waste disposal from the property.
The animals were taken into the custody of Chris D'Anda of Rock N Pawz Animal Rescue. While D'Anda claims the animals were not mistreated and were healthy, authorities are seeking a court order before the pets can be adopted. Some of the animals are receiving veterinary care at hospitals and county facilities, while others are being transported to agencies in the Pacific Northwest via chartered flights.
