Kumaon Road Deaths Surge: 309 Fatalities in 7 Months

Two young men from Rudrapur, Chetan Chauhan, 25, and Vaibhav Chhabra, 24, tragically lost their lives in a motorcycle accident near Haldwani's Tanda police outpost on Friday night. The collision occurred around 350-400 meters from the outpost as they were returning to Rudrapur from Haldwani.
They were discovered by a passerby who alerted the authorities and were subsequently taken to Sushila Tiwari Hospital, where they were pronounced dead. Police suspect excessive speed may have led the rider to lose control, causing the motorcycle to crash into a roadside tree. The victims' families, however, suggested the possibility of a collision with an animal.
As of July 2026, the Kumaon region has recorded 309 road accident fatalities, a stark increase compared to 275 in the entirety of 2025 and 250 in 2024. Data reveals that Udham Singh Nagar district bears the highest burden, with 198 deaths recorded by July, representing nearly 64% of Kumaon's total. This figure is already 54 more than the entire count for 2024, a 37.5% rise.
Nainital followed with 86 deaths until July, while Almora reported 13, Pithoragarh seven, and Champawat five. Bageshwar reported no road fatalities during this period. Authorities attribute the rise in accidents to factors including increased highway traffic, speeding, overloading, and wrong-side driving. Kumaon inspector general Nivedita Kukreti assured that more effective measures will be implemented to curb accidents.
