Kolkata Woman's Fight Forces Police Action After Month
13 Jul
Summary
- Woman's persistent fight led to FIR registration over a month later.
- Victims alleged police initially refused to file a report.
- Settlement claims led to initial police inaction on FIR.

A month after a severe road accident, Kolkata Police have registered an FIR against the driver of a Mercedes-Benz. The incident occurred on June 7 near the Race Course, where a Mercedes allegedly hit a cab head-on, causing injuries to all four passengers. The complainant, Durga Gupta, reported that police at the hospital and later at Hastings Police Station initially refused to file a report.
Victims alleged that officers told them a settlement had been reached, implying no further legal action was necessary. After recovering, Ms. Gupta escalated her concerns to the police commissioner and DCP (South). This prompted senior police officials to direct Hastings Police Station to proceed with the FIR.
Authorities at Hastings Police Station stated that a general diary was made immediately after the accident. They claimed the FIR was registered after an investigation indicated that an accident had indeed taken place. The delay was attributed to the lack of a written complaint at the time of the incident.
