A man identified as Arup Bandopadhyay died after being trapped for over an hour in an elevator at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata. Police from the Tala police station detained five individuals for questioning regarding the incident. The victim's father filed a general diary, prompting the registration of an FIR under sections of culpable homicide.
The preliminary post-mortem report revealed extensive injuries, including fractures to the ribs, hands, and legs, as well as ruptures in his lungs, heart, and liver. Arup Bandopadhyay was admitted to the hospital's trauma care unit.
Allegations suggest no elevator operator was present during the mishap. Hospital Medical Superintendent Saptarshi Chattopadhyay stated the family's claims that the deceased got injured while attempting to exit the elevator when it restarted. He acknowledged the absence of an operator or staff as an administrative lapse.
The hospital has recently faced national attention due to a rape and murder incident in August 2024 and investigations into financial irregularities. Sandip Ghosh, a former principal accused in the financial scam, is currently in jail.
