Authorities in Kolkata have mandated the temporary closure of entry to numerous Durga Puja pandals across the city following a devastating stampede incident. The tragedy resulted in 19 fatalities and left 25 others injured. In response, organizers of prominent pujas, including those at 'Tala Pratyay,' 'Alipore Sarbojanin,' 'Chetla Agrani,' and 'Ballygunge Sarbojanin,' were directed to cease public access.
The show at Allen Park has also been canceled, and organizers at Santosh Mitra Square have scaled down visitor numbers. Similar directives were issued to major pujas in the Bidhannagar satellite township. A senior police officer stated these restrictions are temporary, with a decision on reopening expected soon.
The state administration and Kolkata Police are scheduled to convene a review meeting to assess the situation and decide on future measures. Approximately 3,500 Durga Pujas are currently being celebrated throughout Kolkata.
